SSPI-SE / SMPTE: NASA REPORTING – Live UHD-TV from Space & the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse

  • ENCOMPASS Digital Media 3845 Pleasantdale Road Atlanta, GA, 30340 United States (map)

Presenters:
NASA Experts: Sandy George and Walter Lindblom

Sandy George is the network engineer for the NASA Imagery Experts Group (NIEG). She is the lead engineer for the Multi-Channel Digital Television System (MCDTV). MCDTVallows all the NASA centers to share broadcast quality video routinely and provides a path to the uplink for NASA-TV at Encompass Digital Media. Sandy was responsible for the network to support the live UHD-TV feed from space.

Walt E. Lindblom is the video engineer for the NIEG. He was the video transmission coordinator for NASA coverage of the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse.

Our November meeting will be an unequaled presentation by NASA. Two of their experts, Walter E.Lindblom and Sandy George will share some in-depth knowledge and information about two very different and unique aspects of NASA’s recent work.

In April 2017, NASA did something never before attempted. A live, interactive UHD-TV transmission from the International Space Station (ISS) to an NAB session room in Las Vegas Considering there was zero equipment to support the Space Station side when the project was started it also involved getting a completely NASA internal data signal out of the internal NASA network to a totally external location (IT Security concerns were HIGH!), there was much that could fail. But, in cooperation with AWS (Amazon Web Services) Elemental and Encompass Digital Media, all the pieces came together. NASA continues to shoot and downlink 4K and 6K video from the ISS. Sandy George will handle this aspect of the program and will discuss how this is achieved.

While that was in process, NASA-HQ decided it would be important to cover the 2017 Total Solar Eclipse in August. Mind you, they didn’t take a simple route! In fact, the coverage was from 8 locations across the US, including anchoring the coverage from Charleston, SC. Added into the mix were a couple of live aircraft feeds, as well as transmissions from several solar telescopes across the US. We’ll hear from Walt Lindblom for this portion of the event. Both projects will be reviewed for this program.

This event will be held at Encompass Digital Media, and we are working to include a tour of the Encompass facilities with the presentation. We look forward to having you join us on Monday, November 13th at ENCOMPASS, so please register promptly for this program.

Advanced signup is required, so please register promptly for this program.
